ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory
Learn how music works.
ABRSM asks their students to pass Grade 5 Music Theory in order to take practical and performance exams at Grade 6 level and above. Why? Because understanding how music works helps us to communicate it as meaningfully as possible.
Now that sounds wonderful; but music theory can often be challenging, especially when we are confronted by it for the first time. In our coaching sessions, we will work through the Grade 5 syllabus at a pace that suits the student. Once it clicks, music theory opens up a world of musical understanding and appreciation.

We will work through ABRSM’s series, ‘Discovering Music Theory’. It’s your call where to start: Grade 1, 2, 3, 4 or straight into Grade 5! With that in mind, it will be useful for you to have a copy of the workbook - check out ABRSM’s official shop for reference. It’s also useful to have access to a keyboard of some kind - but you don’t need a real one! A printout of a couple of octaves’ worth will do.
